ABOUT

Hello, I’m Julia

I may not be sure about crabbing but I am sure about creating!

I love it!!

MY HISTORY

It all began with the birth of twins…

Too far back?

OK, I’ll jump to age 10.

That’s when my mom put me in my first real painting class.

(She knew then that I liked to create.)

I was the only kid in a class full of adults.

FIRST ASSIGNMENT

Pick something small and paint it big.

One classmate picked his sneaker. Another picked a flower from outside.

For my 3′ x 5′ canvas, I picked …

… a hotdog!

You see, my twin brother had just played baseball the night before and I still remembered that smell …

civic baseball field hotdogs

… mmmmmm!

I didn’t have a hotdog in class to refer to so I just visualized a hotdog in a bun with ketchup, mustard and relish …

and I began to paint.

Four classes later, I finally finished my hotdog (it measured four feet long) but it was missing a background. My hotdog was floating on a sea of white canvas!

I hadn’t started painting the background yet and I only had 1 class to go!

I was out of time!

In our first class, my teacher (who was really pretty) taught us all about the color wheel

And she showed how diagonal lines are more dynamic than vertical or horizontal lines.

Well, I wanted to impress my teacher!

So I painted BIG BANDS of diagonal stripes.

And I painted secondary colors I mixed using primary colors

just like she taught.

Red, blue and yellow became purple, green and orange!

Viola!

Hotdog!

(Imagine this on a five foot canvas!)

Today, while choosing colors for my website,

this memory came back to me.

And, I thought …

… well, you guessed it, it’s ode to the hotdog

… and to my mom for seeing the artist within me!
